Two Years Experience of University Life

I’ve been looking at Karachi University through my terrace all these years but I didn’t think that one day I’d come here to study.

I didn’t have much of an opinion about it but as my University days neared my expectations went over the roof. I expected all the basic things a university would offer and so much more.

However, when I came here I was thoroughly disillusioned as my expectations lay shattered on the floor.
My woes are endless and if I start listing them, they would end up being a thousand words essay.

All I can say is that, by now I’m used to of most of the things and I somehow survive every day.

I am able to ignore the so-called ‘snide’ comments and bear with the teachers who don’t teach. I have accepted that while I’m here I’d always be greeted with dusty chairs and tables. I won’t be allowed to stroll through the library and look around at books myself.

If there is some paper work that needs to be done, I’d be running around from one corner or the other to get it done and what not.

Anyway, the first impression of this university –very frankly – was pathetic. It’s bearable now but oh well, I hope it gets better.

  1. If Karachi is a mini-Pakistan, KU is a mini-Karachi in ways more than one. I think there is hardly any point in expecting an island of excellence in a choppy ocean of massive chaos. I am not trying to defend KU -- nobody can and nobody should -- but just putting it into some sort of realistic context.

  2. I think, probably, sky high expectations would have been shattered, but some experiences in this university can be really heartbreaking. Probably this blog post is a slight exaggeration, but all of us have, as students, at one time or another, been stunned by how low our expectations have had to fall to accommodate our university experience. Maybe that's just a part of expecting life to be grander than it actually is.

  3. Well sir, I agree to diasgree. KU would be considered as a mini-karachi and fortunately for us we have had teachers who stood up to our expectations, in fact provided more than that but then again I can just count them on my fingers. So there is potential and university life is only bearable because we have gotten into terms with it, as they say beggers can't be choosers. Also all because there is a heavy rainfall people won't stop expecting for a sunny day ahead.

  4. I know I am walking on thin ice, but that has often been an encouragement for me to move further. What you folks are saying represent one part of the spectrum. The other part is brought about by those who find KU a
life-changing experience. There may be no one of the ilk in this batch, but I am talking of students per se. Individuals will always have differing expectations and experiences, but at social level, KU still has the magic that others don't have. It is in that context that I hope all of you will be able to realise what unrealistic expectations can do to spoil the present. I will be very keen to listen to anything real-life, but this
rainfall-sunshine thing doesn't cut much with me. My apologies!
